The History of Snow Daze

At the end of January, beginning of February, Prince George has historically held a week or so of festivities to bring some excitement to our often long and cold winters. In the early 1970’s, this festival was called the Prince George Winter Carnival. Also in the early 1970’s, and around the same time of year, Prince George hosted the fledgling World Championship of Snow Golf tournament, a wacky golf tournament held in the snow featuring competitors in bizarre costumes. In its first few years of existence, the World Championship of Snow Golf exploded in popularity and gained national and international notoriety. In the mid 1970’s, Snow Golf was combined with the Winter Carnival and the ‘Mardi Gras of Winter’ was born. Other popular events at the time (some still in existence today) included Schmocky, Over-The-Line snowball, snow mobile and snow shoe races, Chow mien eating contests, and lots of dancing.

In the early 1980’s, the term ‘snow daze’ became part of the promotion of Mardi Gras, and in 1995, Snow Daze took over as the official name for Prince George’s winter festival. Over the years, many different events have come and gone, but today Snow Daze remains a much anticipated time of the year, providing fun and excitement for all.
