The History of mardi gras

At the end of January, beginning of February, Prince George has historically held a week or so of festivities to bring some excitement to our often long and cold winters. In the early 1970’s, this festival was called the Prince George Winter Carnival. Also in the early 1970’s, and around the same time of year, Prince George hosted the fledgling World Championship of Snow Golf tournament, a wacky golf tournament held in the snow featuring competitors in bizarre costumes. In its first few years of existence, the World Championship of Snow Golf exploded in popularity and gained national and international notoriety. In the mid 1970’s, Snow Golf was combined with the Winter Carnival and the ‘Mardi Gras of Winter’ was born.
